Yes, you need international health insurance.

Don’t take chances with your health or your finances. Here’s why you need global coverage.

  • Many domestic employer-sponsored health plans offer little to no coverage abroad.

Most ACA plans don’t provide international medical coverage. Even the best Medicare supplement plans have limited global benefits.

  • Domestic health plans usually don’t cover medical evacuations.

If you need a medical evacuation, you’ll likely need to pay for it upfront. And make the complicated arrangements on your own. It could cost from $10,000 to over $100,000 based on the medical situation and where it happens.

  • International providers expect you to pay in full when you arrive for care.

Americans are used to showing their health plan ID card and getting service right away. They usually don’t pay upfront or may only make a small co-payment. But many international providers insist you pay up front. And they will deny care and/or take your passport until you do.

  • International claims are usually out of network on a U.S. plan.

First, you’ll have to pay upfront to receive care. And then you’ll likely be reimbursed at a lower rate. That’s because it will be an out-of-network claim.
